About "The Camp" (6:39 min.)

This part of the film is about the conditions in Theresienstadt. The Nazis have established a Jewish administrative system in the camp, which means that the prisoners themselves administrate the rules and regulations issued by the camp leadership. The camp has 60,000 prisoners from all over Europe, who are crowded together in very little space. Many of the Danish prisoners live in barracks, in rooms with double-decker beds, with several people sleeping in each bed. Everyone over the age of 14 must work in the camp – some sew, for example, while others are cobblers, drivers or stonecutters. The children in the camp take care of themselves while the others work. The Danish children quickly make friends with children from other countries, and together they explore the camp, learn each other’s languages and develop a feeling of solidarity.
